Get In The Game
Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come on now, let’s go across to these uncircumcised pagans. Perhaps God will work for us. There’s no rule that says God can only deliver by using a big army. No one can stop God from saving when he sets his mind to it.”
1 Samuel 14:6
Jonathan faced insurmountable odds, yet was willing to face the adversity of the challenge. Sports challenge us to face the internal fears of competition, and the outward adversity of opposition draws out a deep river of spiritual adrenaline that translates into other arenas of our lives.
It’s time to get in the game. Pick a sport. It may be joining a softball team, basketball team, taking up golf, whatever you choose. Just get in the game!
“Sports remain a great metaphor for life’s more difficult lessons. It was through athletics that many of us first came to understand that fear can be tamed; that on a team the whole is more than the sum of its parts; and that the ability to be heroic lies, to a surprising degree, within.” – S. Casey
Decide on a sport and get involved. Don’t put this off – do it today!
Volleyball is the sport i will be involved with I already signed up for a summer league at a church.
I’m going to plan a trip to the golf course with my dad ASAP.
I loved playing Rugby but my bones won’t let me. However, I do hiking, backpacking and running. Need to get to doing them more intentionally.
Today’s challenge is a bit of a struggle for me. First of all, I don’t mind sports as a recreational activity. I used to play volleyball a lot and enjoyed doing so but I so despise the sports culture and mentality of competition and obsession of sports that men get sucked into. Football for instance. Grown men all excited and emotional about other men running around in glorified yoga pants chasing a ball is supposedly manly as defined by our culture??? Is this really what authentic manhood looks like? on the other hand when it comes to the amazing things of God in a spirit filled service you can barely get a holy grunt , amen or a hand raised out of most men. Are we on our knees doing battle for the souls of our nation or even more so our children? Or are we more concerned that little jimmy gets into the sport we idolize. I can see drawing some spiritual insights from sports because even the bible does so. But I believe it only to be because then as is now it was a way in which God could relay truth that people could relate to but God can use anything to teach us things. So, getting into sports in my humble opinion has nothing to do with authentic manhood. I I think if you look around at the men of our culture sports has done more to destroy authentic manhood than help. Not against sports just think they have their place as a recreational activity to enjoy but not as a integration into my daily life as a help in making me an authentic man.
Competetive Sports are still not allowed because of Vovid 19. I’ll continue to do my home workout. Soon my family is moving to a new home and after this I’ll see.
I love sports – plain and simple. I appreciate having that in my life and will work towards cultivating that in my children’s lives.
